The course will be organised in group lessons. The lessons will be given mainly on the Cavaillé-Coll organs of the churches of Notre-Dame and St-Pierre-St-Paul of Epernay. Some instrument lessons and visits will take place in Vertus, Châlons-en-Champagne and Reims. The trainees will be given the opportunity to play repertoire pieces during these visits. In addition, trainees will have access to the instruments for their personal work. Traditionally, a public improvisation concert will be organised on Thursday evening, for trainees willing to participate.

Who Should Attend ? Requirements:

The course is aimed for all musicians wishing to develop their practice of improvisation on the organ: students, amateur or professional organists enjoying this fascinating discipline.

A minimum of technical ease with the instrument is necessary, the use of the pedal board being preferable. Knowing the tones and intervals is essential. It will be appreciated to know the 3 or 4 note cords as well as their reversals, and to master the main cadences. These concepts will be revisited at the start of the training, if necessary.

Program

The program is established, according to the expectations and level of practice of the trainees. Different styles and forms are learned such as: modal improvisation, variations on a choral melody, free improvisation...

Theoretical explanations will be given and then put into practice on the keyboards.
